Volume three starts in May 1863 as Lee evaluated his situation following the great Confederate triumph at Chancellorsville and the loss of Basic Jackson. Lee quickly reorganized his army and headed north, hoping to inflict a war-ending defeat on the Union. But absent Jackson, his army was not the same. At Gettysburg, after three days and nights of horrific fighting with each other climaxed by Pickett's devastating fee, almost one-third of Lee's entire army was killed, wounded, or captured. Meade's losses were identical, but he previously higher reserves. Retreating to Virginia, Lee spent another nine calendar months bolstering his army with ever dwindling procedures. As the wintertime of 1863-64 came to a finish, Lee ready his troops for renewed action. But anticipated to attrition, he previously lost the effort and could fight only a protective war against an overwhelming, implacable foe: U. S. Grant. But Grant soon became aware the valiant Military of North Virginia was like no army he had ever faced. With veteran troops numbering fewer than half those of Grant, Lee grimly were able to grind the Union army to a halt before Richmond. But for how much time? Listeners are urged to follow battles using the maps Freeman himself drew, which are included in the accompanying downloadable PDF doc.
