Douglas McGregor's 1960 booklet The Human Aspect of Business is a groundbreaking analysis of the conditions that produce employment satisfying and meaningful. Traditionally, professionals assumed people were lazy and wouldn't normally work unless totally handled. McGregor, however, assumed this form of management to be predicated on faulty assumptions about individual nature, and felt that professionals should think about their assumptions about what motivates people. He suggested they sketch on research in mindset and the other communal sciences to set-up working conditions that allow all employees to realize their full individual potential. The Man Side of Business is the culmination of McGregor's life's work and research. He compares stricter, more traditional management rules - Theory X - with rules that try to satisfy the entire range of individual needs - Theory Y. He was not necessarily in favor of one theory over another, because people are motivated in another way. But, he argued, when people find work satisfying, they work more productively and successfully. McGregor's work significantly inspired research in the years that adopted, and he is now seen to obtain been one of the very most important business scholars of all time.
