Chaos Monkeys is a memoir of Antonio Garcia Martinez's time working as a coder at Goldman Sachs, as a startup employee and founder, as a product supervisor at Facebook. Martinez started working at Goldman Sachs after university as a prices quant, which is industry slang for a programmer who creates models for prices credit derivatives. Quants possessed low status at the company and Martinez became disillusioned with employees' reliance on the annual bonus offer and the gambling-heavy culture of the work environment. In later 2007, he requested and was offered employment at Adchemy, a startup in California that was growing tools to buy advertising on Google's real-time bidding engine, the system Yahoo uses to find out which bidder gets advertising space for each Google search.
