The Shinkolobwe Mine in the Belgian Congo was explained with a 1943 Manhattan Task intelligence report as the "most important first deposit of uranium yet learned on the globe". As long as the United States remained in control of this mine and its own supply, it possessed a world monopoly on the principal material needed to build an atomic bomb. The uranium from this mine was used to build the bombs lowered on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945. Given the probability that the Germans were also working on an atomic bomb, it was important for the United States to prevent Congo's uranium from being smuggled to Germany. This was given to the recently created Office of Strategic Services, later known as the CIA. Although much has been discussed ALSOS, the trick intelligence mission created to research the German atomic task, so far nothing has been discussed the intelligence mission at the source of uranium - the Belgian Congo.
