Sarah Grand (1854-1943) was a well-known Victorian article writer and suffragette. 'The Man in the Scented Coating' is a tale about an adventurous female, Josepha, who gets lost in a pea-soup fog in London one night time. As she cannot see anything, she follows a fragrance of blooms, which turns out to emanate from a recognized gentleman in disguise who's on a key mission. First they are swept up with a gang of ruffians, one of whom recognises the gentleman as being a member of the royal family (probably the type is modelled on the then Prince of Wales). Josepha follows the puzzle gentleman and his partner to a key apartment hidden in an upstairs level behind a revolving bookcase, where she discovers the Prince's shameful solution. Josepha, a carefully modern woman, stops to dine, discuss and smoking with the Prince...and then, with the risk of imminent finding, the get together must take an unusual escape route.
