On Feb 1, 1861, delegates at the Tx Secession Convention elected to leave the Union. The people of Texas recognized the activities of the convention in a statewide referendum, paving the way for the state of hawaii to secede and also to officially become the seventh condition in the Confederacy. Soon the Texans found themselves involved in a bloody and prolonged civil warfare against their north brethren. During the curse of this warfare, the lives of a large number of Texans, both young and old, were transformed forever. This new anthology, edited by Kenneth W. Howell, incorporates the latest scholarly research how Texans experienced the warfare. Eighteen contributors take us from the battlefront to the home front, ranging from inside the wall space of the Confederate jail to inside the homes of women and children left to fend for themselves while their husbands and fathers were away on faraway battlefields. Also explored are well-known fights that took place in or near Tx, including the Struggle of Galveston, the Struggle of Nueces, the Struggle of Sabine Go away, and the Red River Campaign. Finally, the sociable and cultural areas of the war acquire new analysis, including the experience of women, African Us citizens, Union prisoners of warfare, and noncombatants. The publication is published by College or university of North Tx Press.
