The Financier is the first volume of the Trilogy of Desire, which details the early life of Frank Cowperwood, the boy of any low-level banker, who realizes his skill at funds and business. Set in 18th century Philadelphia, the book comes after Frank as he amasses a sizable bundle of money through stock speculation and purchases of stocks in the growing neighborhood railway industry. He marries an older woman and has two children and uses his new found riches to become socially visible. Things however have a flip for the most detrimental when he has an affair with Aileen Butler, the little girl of any politically visible Irish industrialist. Additionally it is found out that Frank involved in some legitimately questionable acts through the period following the great Chicago flames and is deserted by his politics allies. He is further put on trial for larceny which is convicted and assists 13 weeks in prison before being pardoned. Out of this low point, he pieces about to recoup his lost riches. Will he be lucky once again? Or will his destiny take him on the different course?
