When the European armies of the Third Crusade were defeated at the Challenge of Hattin in 1187 CE, the region of what is today southern Jordan was overrun by Saladin's armies, and over the following five centuries knowledge of Petra's presence was lost to the people of Europe. The historical city and middle of civilization concealed in the desert became a misconception, drawn largely upon Biblical accounts of the people and places in the Holy Land. However, through the Enlightenment of the first 18th hundred years, interesting new theories surfaced, and there grew a need to rediscover the rose-red city. It was in this particular context that the Swiss-born explorer and orientalist Johann Ludwig Burckhardt became the known as the first European to "discover" Petra. Disguised as an Arab, he convinced a local guide to get around him through the many hazards of the Wadi Araba desert in pursuit of the rumored tomb of Aaron and a timeless city concealed in the hillsides. On Saturday, August 22nd, 1812, he ascended the high hillsides of southern Jordan and was led down a deep ravine, which twisted and flipped through until an outstanding sight was disclosed before him: a key valley filled up with ruins and the dark slots of rock-cut tombs. Although his disguise got brought him that much, it also avoided him from having the ability to fully research the ruins or make copies of what he found there. After spending only per day exploring the valley, his guide got grown dubious, so he was required to go on across the Sinai Peninsula, eventually arriving at Cairo on Sept 4th. This expedition marked the origins of everything that is known about this historical and mysterious site. Further expeditions and archaeological investigations over the following two hundreds of years have noticeably broadened knowledge about Petra's past, and the ruined Rose City is currently an archaeological landscaping that has been made famous as a UNESCO World History site, a "new" wonder of the world, so when the repository of the ULTIMATE GOAL in Indiana Jones and the final Crusade. Yet, despite its popularity, many people have no idea about the religious beliefs, artistic creativeness, technological innovation, commerce, and politics of many individuals that resided there.
