In Dec 2128, the warfare with the Libra Alliance finished when the Dixie fleet diverted an asteroid in to the Libra home world, killing nearly all life there. The Gray Panthers of Earth started to mothball their fleet, safe behind their allies and strong defenses. Old and young started to look for opportunities. One acquired it harder than most. As the baby, the Jacka runt Brief Blade acquired survived a religious ritual his contest used to cleansing their population of undesirables, and then be sold to a Libra ship crew before he became a teen. Short Blade acquired learned much during his indentureship with the Libras, and when freed by the humans he enlisted in the Gray Panthers, quickly rising to the list of main petty officer and then ensign.
