Sometimes the higher good requires small bad. Seventeen-year-old Arman Dukoff can't keep in mind life without anxiousness and chronic illness when he finds an expensive self-help retreat in the remote hillsides of Big Sur. He's considered a huge risk - and $2,000 from his meth-head stepfather - for an opportunity to "evolve", as Beau, the retreat innovator, says. Beau is complicated. A daddy amount? A cult innovator? A con man? Arman's not sure, but more than anyone he's ever before found, Beau makes Arman feel something other than what he usually feels - worthless. The retreat element is secluded in seaside California mountains among towering redwoods, so when the iron gates close behind him, Arman believes for a moment that he is able to get better. However the program is a blur of jargon, bizarre rituals, and incomprehensible encounters with a beautiful girl. Arman is for certain he's failing everything. But Beau disagrees; he thinks Arman has a smart future - though he never says at what. And, immediately Arman can't believe that or totally recall, Beau is fully gone. Suicide? Or murder? Arman was the only see, and today the compound is getting tense. And maybe dangerous. As the mysteries and paradoxes multiply and the clues become accusations, Arman must count on the individual he's always trusted the least: himself.
