Orphans - a Larry Lir mystery. An Irish boy with dark, marvelous powers. Who couldn't help but be influenced by the phenomenal success of the Harry Potter series? I got the theory for Orphans from this, but I needed an Irish figure; and I needed a tale rooted in Celtic mythology, story, and misconception; and I needed to combine each one of these elements into a modern environment that children could enjoy. I needed to incorporate modern technology, modern forensics, and modern thinking into a spellbinding story for children, and in Larry Lir, I think I found that figure. Larry is a 12-year-old who fends typically for himself in a rambling mansion on the Hill of Howth, in Dublin. Orphans is, I really believe, aptly titled. The primary figure, Larry, is remaining an orphan following the brutal murder of his parents. When three Cuban children, just lately orphaned themselves, appeal to Larry for help, he must take up their circumstance. The shadow of Charles Dickens and the wonderful Oliver Twist looms somewhat here. Even his archenemy is an orphan. There is an important underlying meaning in the publication that pertains to basic press liberty and democratic principles. The book is set generally in Ireland, both in Dublin and Wexford. Other locations used will be the USA and Cuba. There are strong hints of mythology like the famous fable of Oisin, warned never to dismount from his horses when he delivered to Irish ground lest the years meet up with him. THE KIDS of Lir, of whom Larry is a primary descendant, also play a role in this story. A curse using their time hangs over Larry. The publication shows, I am hoping, the independent spirit that dwells within children and the battle of triumph over evil.
