Loss of life. It's something that Ada Palomino has always known so well, having developed in a residence of horrors, ornamented by a family group plagued by ghosts and demons and things that go bump in the night. But after the rapid and tragic death of her mother two years ago, death has never believed so personal. Roughly close. Now 18, Ada is wanting to move on with her life, and the last month of warmer summer months holds only sunshine and claims, with her first year at a Portland design school just about the bend. That's, until her progressively more violent and reasonable dreams, dreams of other worlds, of portals and veils where her mother is tortured and souls bleed for mercy, start to blend into simple fact. Ada must lean on her older sister, Perry, to make sense of everything, but even then, she's never believed more by themselves. Then there's Jay. High, handsome, and deeply secret, Jay would be yet another stranger, a familiar face on the bus, if it wasn't for the actual fact that Ada has achieved him before. Every evening. In every one dream. And the more that Ada is attracted to him in both worlds, a lot more she's at risk of dropping everything - including her heart and soul, and her very spirit.
