Common Sense is a pamphlet written by Thomas Paine in 1775-76 advocating independence from Great Britain to people in the thirteen colonies. Writing in clear and persuasive prose, Paine marshaled moral and politics quarrels to encourage common people in the colonies to fight for egalitarian government. It was shared anonymously on January 10, 1776, at the start of the North american Revolution, and became an immediate sensation. It was sold and distributed widely and read aloud at taverns and assembly places. Compared to the population of the colonies in those days (2.5 million), it got the largest sales and flow of any e book shared in American record. As of 2006, it remains the all-time best selling American title. Common Sense made general public a persuasive and impassioned circumstance for independence, which before the pamphlet hadn't yet been given serious intellectual thought. He connected independence with common dissenting Protestant values as a way to provide a distinctly American politics personality, structuring Common Sense as though it were a sermon. Historian Gordon S. Wood referred to Common Sense as "the most incendiary and popular pamphlet of the complete revolutionary time".
