As children, we're asked, "What do you want to be when you develop up?" As parents we're asked, "What do you do for a full time income?" We identify with our jobs, they establish us. We're often so occupied with our careers, there's little time to question our chosen pathways. That is, until life steps in. The Great Downturn of 2008 still left thousands being lost and insecure; an identical but much bigger event took place in 1929. When such occurrences occur, we could fall into despair or perhaps it could be the time to re-evaluate what we really want out of life. What's most important to you? Most of you would say that you would like to be better, more comfortable people. In their quest for happiness folks have described themselves by their jobs, their money, their property. They have acted as if their self-esteem, their self-worth, could be bought. Material acquisition became a way of life. Bigger plus more is better. And in a nanosecond everything can disappear. Wealth vanishes, jobs and careers are wiped out. Then what? This paradigm could be known as living life outside in. Determining oneself by stuff that lies beyond our control, by how things show up on the outside, as though happiness and self-worth can be bought, is living outside in. This book focuses on another type of paradigm: living inside out. Rather than defining oneself by game titles, wealth, property, acquisitions, and other things, this model requires a look within ourselves to discover who we are really. It creates an empowering model that places individuals in control of their life, their personal value, and their happiness, rather than inserting external circumstances in control of how we feel about ourselves. Spiritual thinkers, philosophers, secular humanists have for years and years argued that the quest for the "fantastic calf" will not provide ultimate happiness.
