In Long Highway to Hard Fact: The 100 12 months Mission to produce the Country wide Museum of DARK-COLORED History and Culture, Robert L. Wilkins says the story of how his fascination with why there wasn't a countrywide museum dedicated to African American background and culture became an obsession - eventually leading him to quit his job as an legal professional when his partner was seven a few months pregnant with the second child, and make it his objective to help the museum turn into a reality. Long Highway to Hard Fact chronicles the early background, when staunch advocates looked for to create a monument for black troops 50 years following the end of the Civil War and in respond to the pervasive indignities of that time period, including lynching, Jim Crow segregation, and the slander of the racist film Labor and birth of a Land. The movements soon developed to envision developing a countrywide museum, and Wilkins employs the endless road blocks through the decades, culminating in his honor of becoming an associate of the Presidential Fee that wrote the plan for creating the museum and exactly how, with support of both black and white Democrats and Republicans, Congress finally certified the museum. In Sept 2016, exactly 100 years after the movements to generate it began, the Smithsonian will open up the Country wide Museum of DARK-COLORED History and Culture. The book's name is inspired in part by Wayne Baldwin, who testified in Congress in 1968 that "My background...contains the truth about America. It will be hard to teach it." Long Highway to Hard Fact concludes that journey took 100 years because many in America are unwilling to confront the history of America's legacy of slavery and discrimination, and that the only reason this museum finally became a reality is an unlikely, bipartisan coalition of political leaders possessed the courage and wisdom to declare that America cannot, and really should not, continue steadily to evade the hard truth.
