In 1906, Mikhail Kuzmin published Wings, the first book in Russian to discuss same-sex human relationships in a good light. With Vanya Says, Go!, Wayne Goodman retells the storyplot from the point of view of the young man at the heart of the story. The initial work covered only three sections, but a fourth has been put into round out the storyplot and provide some closure. Kuzmin was one of the most celebrated poets of his time, the Silver precious metal Age of Russian poetry. While his poems were quite successful, his somewhat-autobiographical book Wings was fulfilled with skepticism and criticism. Kuzmin used many constructs from poetry (individuals who show up all too quickly without second mention, plot jumps with little connecting material, long-winded orations); however, his descriptions of landscapes are delightful, and the dialogue is quirky and colourful. Vanya Says, Go! is crafted for the modern listener while keeping a lot of the initial Russian style. It is a home window into a time and place long gone. The storyplot is narrated by the primary character, who at 16 years of age is interacting with being an orphan foisted off on friends of faraway relatives and attempting to acquaint himself along with his intimate orientation while also exploring various religious and philosophical frameworks.
