Stella Benson (1892-1933) was an British feminist, novelist, poet, and brief story and travel copy writer. The Desert Islander is the storyplot of a deserter from the France Foreign Legion who seeks help from an Englishman surviving in a remote control part of southern China through the Chinese conflict. Two facts quickly become evident about our legionnaire. First, that he has a narcissistic personality disorder which leaves him devoid of empathy and in eager need to attention and adulation. Second that he is experiencing a gangrenous leg. The imperturbable Englishman, who is totally disinclined to pander to his visitor's over-bloated sense of self-importance, insists on setting off next morning hours through the struggling zone to try to bring his guest to a medical center.
