John Davys Beresford (1873 - 1947) was an British writer, now remembered for his early science fiction and short experiences in the horror report and ghost report genres. Reparation is a odd short report. Angus, a engineer returning to Britain from Cape Town, emerges a first course passing by an ailing acquaintance on the pretext that he requires a secretary through the voyage. Once they set sail it becomes clear that there is in truth no secretarial work to be done and he's puzzled as to why he has been considered on. One evening he's called to his employer's cabin. The old man is dying. On his deathbed, he entrusts Angus with a bag of uncut diamond jewelry and instructions to give them to a woman, Sarah Browning, who experienced once been his mistress, and with who he suspects he may have had a child. The old man dies. Angus will his better to find Sarah Browning, but finds that she has already remaining the address he had been given. But each time he tries to abandon the quest, odd - and sometimes sinister - events occur which set him back again on the track of the elusive woman.
