1838. A divided country. To save the lives of others May Bedloe must risk her own.... The Ohio River. May Bedloe is a seamstress to her cousin, the flamboyant celebrity Comfort Virtue. When they board the doomed Moselle their paths mix with Mrs Flora Howard, a rich abolitionist and notorious opportunist. Mrs Howard is quick to lure Comfort to her cause - a cause, it appears, that does not have any use for tranquil little May. Casting from her own for the very first time, May lands a job on Hugo Cushin's wondrous Floating Theater - a flatboat that sails the Ohio accomplishing plays to the townsfolk along the way. Though shy initially, May quickly confirms herself drawn into the eccentric troupe of people aboard her new home: to sanctimonious, haughty Mrs Niffen and her browbeaten man; to kind and mild Leo, who steers the theatre in one riverbank town to another; to great, open-hearted Liddy; and the majority of all, to the inscrutable Hugo himself. As the motorboat drifts south down the river, May slowly but surely learns what this means to belong on her own terms, and the way to fashion a family group of sorts from this ragtag couple of players. And May's new lease of life is beginning to take form around her, the reappearance of Comfort and Mrs Howard threatens to throw everything off course. To repay an old debt, May isn't just compelled to break regulations but also to protect a solution which sets the fate of the complete theatre - and all her hopes for a happy future - in danger....
