The Germans emerged from other trenches and advanced as Florence and her stretcher situations escaped by lorry. In 1918, after years spent nursing men smashed and pulverised by machine firearm fire, she confronted yet another challenge - an epidemic of Spanish flu. They delivered to a world that accepted only male courage and were quickly overlooked, two of these granted such meagre pensions they perished destitute and overlooked.
