In 1935, Dottie Krasinsky is the epitome of the present day young lady. A bookkeeper in midtown Manhattan, Dottie steals kisses from her regular beau, complies with her girlfriends for refreshments, and eye the latest styles. Yet at heart, she is a dutiful little girl, living with her Yiddish-speaking parents on the low East Part. So when, after a single careless night, she locates herself in a family group way with a charismatic but unsuitable man, she is desperate: unwed, doubtful, and working out of options. After the beginning of five children - and 20 years as a housewife - Dottie's immigrant mom, Rose, is scratching to return to the interpersonal activism she embraced as a young woman. With hits and breadlines at home and Country wide Socialism growing in European countries, there is a lot more important work to do than cooking and cleaning. So when she realizes that she, too, is pregnant, she battles to reconcile her longings with her beliefs. As mom and little girl wrestle with unthinkable alternatives, they are compelled to confront their values, the changing world, and the actual fact that their lives won't again be the same.
