"Tarzan of the Apes" is a book compiled by Edgar Grain Burroughs, the first in a series of books about the title character Tarzan. It was first publicized in the pulp newspaper All Story Magazine in Oct, 1912; the first reserve edition was publicized in 1914. The type was so popular that Burroughs continued the series into the 1940s with two dozen sequels.
The book tells the storyline of John Clayton, blessed in the Traditional western seaside jungles of equatorial Africa to a marooned couple from Britain, John and Alice (Rutherford) Clayton, Lord and Female Greystoke. Implemented as an infant by the she ape Kala after his parents died (his daddy is wiped out by the savage king ape Kerchak), Clayton is named "Tarzan" ("White Epidermis" in the ape vocabulary) and lifted in ignorance of his real human heritage.
