"Following the kingship descended from heaven, the kingship is at Eridu." - Excerpt from the starting paragraph of the Sumerian Ruler List Growing from the desert flats of southern Iraq can be seen the remains of a huge mound, approximately 1750 foot x 1750 foot in size, encircled by several smaller mounds. Known today as Find out Abu Shahrain, or in the historic world as Eridu, this site contains some of best examples of the Ubaid culture, and it was main urban centers of civilization in southern Mesopotamia, if not the first itself. Many famous tales came from the mythical panoramas of Iraq's deep south. Inside the literature of historic Sumer, Eridu was regarded as the primordial city, the first urban center, thought to have existed a long time before the fantastic mythical flood that wiped out individuals culture in the Publication of Genesis and other preceding traditions. It had been to places such as this that Western explorers first came in the 19th hundred years, searching for the roots of the lands which the Bible referred to as the cradle of the human race. In doing so, they uncovered that Eridu was also a real place. The astonishing site is situated about eight kilometers southwest of the Sumerian city of Ur, so when it was first excavated in the middle-19th century, American archaeologists were puzzled as to how a city as large as this could have existed in such a huge and waterless desert. But Eridu is put on the border of the fantastic alluvial plain of Sumer, a untamed and beautiful marshland where in fact the Tigris and the Euphrates meet. This was the Biblical "Garden of Eden", an ancient panorama that was renowned because of its fertility in the past.
