At the level of their ability in the ninth and tenth ages, the Vikings felt invincible - conquering well-armed warriors whose boats were the ultimate in seafaring technology. From island bases close to the deltas of major waterways, they used the waterways to scour the countryside, looting and burning towns, plundering product owner shipments, and stripping churches and monasteries of these gold, silver, and jeweled treasures. The Norsemen eventually penetrated most of Britain and Scotland, founded locations in Ireland, gained a robust province in France, managed Frisia and the present day Netherlands, and raided lands around Spain, moving into the Mediterranean to harm Italy and North Africa. They founded the first Russian kingdom, challenged Constantinople, and provided an individual shield for the Byzantine emperor. They settled Iceland, where they developed Europe's first republic; founded two colonies on Greenland; and explored parts of THE UNITED STATES five ages before Christopher Columbus landed in the Americas. Then, like the abrupt end of a summertime thunderstorm, their adventures ceased.
