There's a tendency to use the word depression to describe times or episodes of sadness that each of us experience every once in awhile. And for most of us, during these periods it isn't always easy to discern where normal sorrow ends and medical depression starts. Yet, whoever has ever experienced an episode of major depression understands - at least following the depression has raised - that what they feel is more than simply ongoing or consistent sadness. Regarding to doctors, medical depression is an illness seen as a a cluster of emotions, thoughts and conducts that are incredibly distinct from a person's normal range of feelings and performing. The effect of a complex connections of biologic, emotional and public factors, a significant depressive disorder can make a person extremely delicate to life circumstances, the least of which can chuck him/her into total lack of hope. During a major depression, someone can become surrounded by emotions of sadness, hopelessness, helplessness, and emptiness, and these emotions can distort every thought and experience, making life seem to be hopeless and unworthy. Emotions of being deeply and continuously deprived, unworthy, insignificant, and guilt-ridden build on emotions of sadness. At the same time, a person may feel chronically irritable, often exploding into anger and annoyance. While a significant depression may be activated by some life event or circumstance, a person's disposition reaction may seem to be greatly exaggerated. However, depression has less to do with life's happenings than with a person's existing vulnerability to the problem. In some cases, someone may experience a significant depression as a single episode, however in most cases, medical depression will recur occasionally, reactively or cyclically. A major depressive episode may last up to several years. When someone experiences milder depressive episodes, this is called dysthymia. For someone suffering from dysthymia, certain life circumstances, such as lack of employment, divorce, or relocating to a new environment, may provoke a much deeper depression. For a few individuals, there is a seasonal element of their depression called Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). That is a form of reactive depression that is more prevalent in northern parts of the country where climatic extreme changes are greater. SAD usually impacts people in the show up or winter and is characterized by exhaustion, carbohydrate desires, overeating, lack of energy or motivation to do activities normally liked, and oversleeping. While the exact cause of SAD is not certain, it's possible that it could be related to the way in which the light responsive pineal gland in the mind functions.
