"A splendid little conflict." (John Hay, US Ambassador to the uk, describing the conflict in a notice to Theodore Roosevelt) In 1898, one of Spain's last possessions in the brand new World, Cuba, was waging a conflict for self-reliance, and many People in america believed that the United States should side with Cuba against Spain. Initially, Republican Leader William McKinley wanted to avoid any wars, and because of its part, Spain also wanted to avoid any discord with USA and its own powerful navy. However, Spain also wanted to keep Cuba, which it seen as a province of Spain rather than a colony. Cuba was very important to the Spanish current economic climate as well, as it produced valuable goods such as sugars and also possessed a booming slot at Havana. All the while, American economic pursuits were being harmed by the ongoing discord between Cuban nationalists and Spain. Stores' trading with Cuba was suffering now that the island was having discord, and the American press capitalized on the ongoing Cuban struggle for independence. In an effort to sell papers, the press frequently sensationalized experiences, which came to be known as "yellowish journalism." Through the run-up to conflict, yellow journalism propagate false experiences about the Cuban discord in order to market magazines in the competitive NEW YORK market. Despite Leader McKinley's wishes to avoid a conflict, he was required to aid a conflict with Spain after the American navy vessel USS Maine endured an explosion in Havana harbor. McKinley possessed sent the dispatch there to help protect Americans in Cuba from the violence that was occurring there, but the explosion devastated the dispatch, which sunk quickly in the harbor. 266 American sailors aboard the USS Maine passed on. Although the reason for the explosion was never motivated, yellowish journalists in the American press blamed Spain, claiming the dispatch was sabotaged. Leader McKinley was unable to resist popular pressure after having a US Navy record also claimed that the dispatch had been subject to an explosion beyond its hull which ignited powder mags inside the dispatch. Later investigations demonstrated inconclusive, but Leader McKinley was now required to accept conflict with Spain. Congress declared conflict, and the US Navy started out a blockade of Cuba and Puerto Rico. THE UNITED STATES Pacific fleet sailed to the Philippines, which were then a Spanish ownership. Despite supply problems from working so far from existing US Naval bases, the US fleet defeated the Spanish fleet in Manila. The US Military, meanwhile, arrived 15,000 troops on Cuba. NY politician Theodore Roosevelt, who was simply advocating for conflict with Spain to aid the Cuban revolutionaries, became a member of the US Military and participated in its Cuba campaign, becoming well known for his involvement with the "Abrasive Riders". Regardless of the superiority of the Spanish rifles, they were overwhelmed by the amount of US Army forces backed by artillery and Gatling weapons.
