"The American" is a novel by Henry James was originally posted as a serial in "The Atlantic Regular monthly" in 1876-1877 and then as a book in 1877. The novel can be an uneasy combo of social humor and melodrama regarding the adventures and misadventures of Christopher Newman, an essentially good-hearted but rather gauche American businessman on his first travel of Europe.
Newman is buying world not the same as the simple, harsh realities of 19th hundred years American business. He encounters both the beauty and the ugliness of European countries, and learns never to take either for granted. The key of the novel concerns Newman's courtship of a widow from an aristocratic Parisian family.
