Set during the chaotic years of World Conflict II, The General's Women explains to the story of the conflicted romance between General Dwight Eisenhower and Kay Summersby, his Irish drivers/aide, and the impact of this romance on Mamie Eisenhower and her life in Washington during the war. Advised from three alternating details of view (Kay's, Ike's, and Mamie's), the novel charts the deepening of the partnership as Ike and Kay move from England to North Africa to England, France, and Germany before and following the Normandy landing. By the end of the conflict, Ike is faced with the heart-wrenching choice between marrying Kay and a political future. The story remains into the post-war years, as Ike (time for Mamie) becomes Army chief of personnel, chief executive of Columbia School, supreme commander of NATO, and chief executive of america. Kay, meanwhile, struggles to make a life and work of her own, writing two memoirs: the first (Eisenhower Was My Boss, 1948) about her conflict use Ike; the second (Past Forgetting, 1976) about their romance. An author's word handles the complicated question of the reality of Kay's tale as it made an appearance in the posthumously shared Past Forgetting.
