Mao Zedong's labor reform camps were notoriously brutal; modeled after the Soviet gulag, their inmates were at the mercy of backbreaking labor, malnutrition, and vindictive wardens. Xu Hongci, a young medical learner, was a dedicated member of the Communist Party until he fell sufferer to Mao Zedong's Anti-Rightist Marketing campaign in 1957.
