At the guts of each of the four great Shakespearean tragedies - Hamlet, Macbeth, Ruler Lear, and Othello - is a robust figure who is led to damage by the fatal character flaw. In the case of Macbeth it is ambition. First a valiant warrior and staunch servant of his regal overlord Duncan, Macbeth succumbs to the lure of utter political domination, which brings about murder, revolt, and complete defeat. Many scholars concur that Macbeth, which was first published in the First Folio of 1623, was probably discussed 1606. It had been intended to be highly laudatory to the recently crowned King Wayne I, whose accession united the crowns of England and Scotland and who was regarded as a distant descendent of Banquo. The play also relates lots of modern-day issues, including witch tests and demonology, a subject in which Ruler James got a great interest, and the Gunpowder storyline of 1605.
