The book starts with a short examination of the effect that the reports have had on modern criminal offense literature. It goes on to look at the roots of the character of Holmes himself from his appearance to his drug use and intended dislike of women. We then move onto a mini-biography of some of the significant character types in the series. Each one of the original reports by Conan Doyle is analyzed in order to explain some of the more esoteric aspects and an assessment is constructed of the attempts to create a proper chronology for the reports - as Doyle didn't write the reports in strict chronological order. The next half of the book targets Holmes's profession on the display. There is a brief study of some of the more notable actors to have portrayed Holmes and the movies in which they appeared. Finally we look at the possible requirements for a definitive display portrayal of the cannon.
