Plato was a philosopher in Classical Greece and the founder of the Academy in Athens, the first organization of higher learning under western culture. He is generally considered the most pivotal body in the introduction of beliefs, especially the Traditional western tradition. Unlike almost most of his philosophical contemporaries, Plato's complete work is thought to have survived intact for over 2400 years. Along with his instructor, Socrates, and his most famous learner, Aristotle, Plato laid the very foundations of American philosophy and research. Alfred North Whitehead once known: "the safest general characterization of the European philosophical tradition is the fact it involves some footnotes to Plato." Not only is it a foundational body for Western research, beliefs, and mathematics, Plato in addition has often been cited as one of the founders of Traditional western religious beliefs and spirituality. Friedrich Nietzsche, amidst other scholars, called Christianity "Platonism for people". Plato's influence on Religious thought is often regarded as mediated by his major influence on Saint Augustine of Hippo, one of the main philosophers and theologians in the history of Christianity. Plato was the innovator of the written dialogue and dialectic varieties in beliefs, which originate with him. Plato has been the founder of Western political philosophy, with his Republic and Laws among other dialogues, providing a few of the earliest extant treatments of political questions from a philosophical perspective.
