Florida, now America's third most populous point out, was a distant, under-populated wilderness in the early 19th hundred years. Two men, father and child, were major players in the state's development and eventual statehood. Yet their jobs were significantly different and they achieved prominence in totally divergent ways. Despite their successes they remain mostly ignored today. Moses Elias Levy, a businessman and programmer, bought a large number of acres of Florida land from Spanish grantees and proven "Pilgrimage", supposed as a homeland for displaced Jews. He suggested America's first university for Jewish children and relentlessly advocated for Judaism (as well as the abolition of slavery). His child, David Levy Yulee became a lawyer, politician, territorial delegate to Congress and finally, one of Florida's first two Senators. He lobbied for Florida's entrance to the Union in 1845. He was the stubborn contractor of Florida's first cross-state railroad at the same time when there were virtually no roads. This is a brief history of Frontier Florida, a story of religious beliefs and politics, slavery and the Civil War, and a glance into interactions of fathers and sons.
