"Thuvia, Maid of Mars" is a research fantasy book from the "Barsoom" series. The main people are Carthoris (the son of John Carter of Mars) and Thuvia of Ptarth, each of whom made an appearance in the last two books. Carthoris is madly deeply in love with Thuvia. This love was foreshadowed by the end of the prior novel. However Thuvia is guaranteed to Kulan Tith, Jeddak of Kaol. On Barsoom little or nothing can break an engagement between a guy and female except death, but the new suitor might not cause that fatality.
Thus it is the fact Thuvia will have none of them of him. This example leaves Carthoris in a predicament. As Thuvia suffers the common Burroughsian heroine's fate to be kidnapped and in need of rescue, Carthoris' goal is abetted by circumstances. Thus he packages out to get the love of his life, igniting a battle between the red countries of Barsoom as a result to be framed as the kidnapper of Thuvia.
