Helen Small is journalist at the largest news corporation in the Republic of Tx, and a survivor. An army of Chaste's zealots known as the Gray Alliance has used on the "patriotic" call of safeguarding the Republic from survivors, who they believe that - based upon phony information from Chaste - remain growing the plague. Whenever a mob of Gray Alliance followers murder a survivor, Helen finds herself in an progressively more hostile and fearful atmosphere as she makes an attempt to uncover the truth and expose Chaste's lies. All the while, she battles with her own guilt at having survived the plague that killed both her hubby and child.
