W. W. Jacobs was an British writer, famous for his humorous brief stories, particularly those relating the preposterous adventures and misadventures of sailors on leave. The collection Short Cruises contains a few of W. W. Jacobs' most popular people, including the nighttime watchman at the docks in Wapping who relates the experiences of his friends Ginger Dick, Sam Small and Peter Russet. 'The Replacement' is a humorous tale narrated by the night watchman who have made two dangerous foes - any office guy and the philandering skipper of a coal barge. Any office boy is set to catch the watchman doing something he shouldn't to be able to get him in big trouble. The skipper is eager to dally along with his mistress without having to be observed. Along with the watchman would just like to nip off for a beverage during his watch without anyone noticing. After some awkward encounters between the three protagonists, the situation is further complicated when the skipper's wife makes a decision to pay him a shock visit.
