The Tone of voice in the Night is an uncanny story about a ship becalmed in fog in the center of the Pacific. In the night time, the watch hears a speech hailing the ship. It would seem to be always a lone man in a rowing boat, but the person does not want to be seen. He is starving and urgently desires them to give him food - but despite this, he will not deal with the ship and vehemently rejects the thought of being rescued. Instead they need to float some provisions out to him in a kennel, which he will take off to a local island where his fiancée is dying of being hungry. A few hours later he profits and instructs a horrifying and amazing tale.
