Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton (1874 - 1922) was a polar explorer who led three United kingdom expeditions to the Antarctic. 'The Voyage of the Adam Caird' is the storyplot of Shackleton's 1916 failed attempt at a crossing of Antarctica from sea to sea via the pole. The expedition considered disaster when Shackleton's ship, Stamina, became captured in pack snow and was little by little crushed. The team escaped by camping on the sea snow until it disintegrated, then by starting the lifeboats to reach Elephant Island. After that a party led by Shackleton placed sail for the inhabited island of South Georgia, a stormy sea voyage of 720 nautical kilometers and Shackleton's most famous exploit.
