Just what a many-colored career that was which commenced amidst the pastoral solitudes of Bethlehem, and finished in the chamber where in fact the dying ears observed the blare of the trumpets that declared the accession of Bathsheba's kid! None of the great men of scripture go through a span of so many changes as David; do not require touched human life at so many factors; do not require were so tempered and polished by swift alternation of heating and cold, by such heavy blows and the friction of such immediate revolutions. These quick transitions of bundle of money, and this wide experience, will be the many-colored threads from which the rich web of his psalms is woven. And while his life is singularly varied, his personality is also singularly full and flexible. In this respect, too, he is most unlike the other leading numbers of Old Testament record. Comparison him, for example, with the stern majesty of Moses or the unvarying firmness in the gaunt power of Elijah. These and the other mighty men in Israel are like the ruder tools of music - the trumpet of Sinai, using its one prolonged word. David is like his own harp of several chords, by which the breath of God murmured, pulling forth wailing and rejoicing, the clear diamond ring of triumphant trust, the reduced plaint of penitence, the blended harmonies of all devout emotions.
