Beena and Sadhana are sisters who show a bond that can have only been shaped by the most unusual of childhoods - and by shared tragedy. Orphaned as teens, they have become up under the exasperated watch of these Sikh uncle, who works a bagel shop in Montreal's Hasidic community of Mile End. Together, they try to seem sensible of the abundant, complicated brew of values, rituals, and values that form their inheritance. Yet as they grow towards adulthood, their pathways start to diverge. Beena catches the attention of 1 of the "bagel guys" and finds herself pregnant at 16 while Sadhana drives herself to perfectionism and anorexia. When we first meet the adult Beena, she actually is grappling with a brand new grief: Sadhana has passed away out of the blue and strangely, her body lying undiscovered for weekly before anyone realizes what has occurred. Beena is remaining with a burden of guilt and an unsettled feeling about the circumstances of her sister's fatality, which she sets about to reveal. Her search stirs thoughts and starts wounds, threatening to undo the safe, orderly lifetime she's painstakingly designed for herself and her child.
