The Arthurian Romances by Chrétien de Troyes form the wellspring of the story of Ruler Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. Experiences of knightly valour in the Welsh Marches experienced existed prior to the 12th hundred years, but it was the impressive poetry and creativity of Chrétien, the 12th hundred years French poet and trouvère, which helped bring alive the fantastic characters of Arthur, his better half Guinevere, Lancelot and more. In fact, it was here, in these romances, that the tale of Lancelot of the Lake and his fated love for Guinevere first made its appearance in Western european literature. And definately not being trapped in formal medieval stanzas, their interest has come down to us in words that still resonate: 'From as soon as he caught sight of her, he didn't switch or take his sight and face from her.' From these four romances emerge a chivalric Arthurian perspective as stunning and individuals as a lot more familiar telling by Sir Thomas Malory three centuries later. The three other stories are equally wealthy and compelling, painting images of knightly ethics, courageous deeds and most importantly love, honour and service. Chrétien's telling is the excellent Arthurian literary source, combining as it can the British story, the characters and the escapades with a French courtly sensitivity. Though less known than Lancelot and Guinevere, the storyplot of the tests leading to the love between Eric and Enide is just as memorable; in Cligès, the young hero travels between Greece and Arthur's court to be able to earn his spurs and his love; and in Yvain, the knight is helped by way of a faithful lion to achieve his target. These Four Arthurian Romances are read with full commitment by Nicholas Boulton using the translation by W. W. Comfort.
