When the very first Marine Division started out its invasion of Peleliu in September 1944, the procedure in the South Pacific was to take but four times. In fact, capturing this small coral island in the Palaus using its strategic airstrip got 8 weeks and involved a few of the bloodiest fighting of the Second World Battle in the Pacific. Rather than the easy conquest these were led to expect, the Marines who landed on Peleliu faced a conflict of attrition from the island's Japanese defenders, who experienced dug tunnels and fortified the island's solid terrain. Once the Marines' advance stalled after a week of heavy casualties, the "Wildcats" of the 81st Infantry Section were called in, at first as support. Eventually, the very first Marines Section was evacuated and the 81st Infantry guaranteed the island. Now Bobby C. Blair and John Peter DeCioccio inform the story of this plan through the sight of the 81st Infantry to provide a revised assessment. Past accounts of the fight have focused on the very first Marines, basically overlooking the 81st Infantry Division's contributions. Victory at Peleliu demonstrates that minus the army's help, the marines cannot have been successful on Peleliu. Blair and DeCioccio have mined the 81st Division's unit records and interviewed results of veteran members. The brand new data they feature troubles the orthodox view that the 81st Infantry just mopped up an already cracked foe. Allowing their interviewees in order to much of the storyline, the writers also provide a human face to a brutal fight. The reserve is released by School of Oklahoma Press.
