Preview: J.D. Vance's Hillbilly Elegy is a memoir about his life growing up in Ohio as the kid of any working-class family with origins in Appalachia. Vance uses his experience in a dysfunctional family to talk about the problems with what he calls hillbilly culture. He says that hillbilly culture is mired in laziness, medicine use, and learned helplessness. Hillbillies promise to be focused on effort, but Vance thinks they actually won't work at available jobs, miring them in poverty. He argues that hillbillies must recommit to establishments like the family and the chapel in order to flee poverty. Vance's grandparents, Jim Vance and Bonnie Blanton, were born in the city of Jackson in southeast Kentucky. They kept in the 1940s when Bonnie, or Mamaw, became pregnant at 14. They relocated to Middletown, Ohio, where Jim, or Pawpaw, performed in the metal mill. Their first child, that led those to leave Appalachia, was stillborn. Eventually, though, the family possessed three children, including a middle princess, Bev, who became J.D. Vance's mom.
