The Circle employs the career of Mae Holland, a young and angst-ridden millennial, as she advances in the corporate hierarchy of the Circle, a company located in the SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA Bay Area. Her good friend and university roommate, Annie, has already secured an influential position at the Circle, which is referred to as having combined best wishes features of Yahoo, Facebook, and Amazon in one place. Mae is pleased to have the work, since it allowed her to go from Fresno, her boring hometown, although she remains worried about the health of her daddy and well-being of her mother. Mae is designated to a posture in customer support - "customer experience representative" - and trained by Dan, a true believer in the social marketing community created by the Circle. While Mae shows immediate assurance as a customer experience representative which is glad to have left her dead-end utility company job behind, she will not initially embrace the intensely interactive atmosphere at the Circle.
