The original edition of The World as Will and Idea came out in 1818, but in 1844 Schopenhauer printed an extended version. It comprised the 'Criticism of the Kantian School of thought', a lengthy file; and Supplements to the First Booklet (The Doctrine of the thought of Conception) and the Second Booklet (The Doctrine of Conception or Understanding of the Understanding). The initial edition of The World as Will and Idea had been largely ignored, and for 25 irritating years, Schopenhauer needed to live with a feeling of inability, while staying as acute, as challenging and since creative as ever before. His decision to broaden and build on his original ideas with the help of the Supplements, clarifying and furthering his views, made his body of work even more robust. It was with this second edition that his reputation get spread around, and at last his position as a significant German philosopher of the 19th century was established. In this particular new volume, following the Kantian critique, are numerous essays, including 'On the Senses', Around the Relation of Understanding of Conception to Abstract Knowledge, 'On Man's Dependence on Metaphysics' and 'On the Primacy of the Will in Self-Consciousness'. Leighton Pugh again reads with the clearness and understanding that was praised following the release of The World as Will and Idea, Amount 1. Translation: R. B. Haldane and J. Kemp. Footnotes included.
