This is the storyline of how America's first women troops helped win World Battle I, received the vote, and fought the united states Army. In 1918 the united states Army Sign Corps directed 223 women to France. They were masters of the latest technology: calling switchboard. Standard John Pershing, commander of the North american Expeditionary Pushes, demanded feminine "wire experts" when he learned that inexperienced doughboys were not able to keep him linked with soldiers under flame. Without marketing communications for even one hour, the military would collapse. While suffragettes picketed the White House and Leader Woodrow Wilson struggled to persuade a segregationist Congress to provide women of most races the vote, these capable and courageous young women swore the military oath. Elizabeth Cobbs discloses the obstacles they experienced in a conflict zone where male troops welcomed, resented, wooed, mocked, saluted, and in the end celebrated them. The military discharged the last Hello Women in 1920. When the operators sailed home, the military unexpectedly dismissed them without veterans' benefits. They started a 60-season battle that a couple of survivors transported to triumph in 1979. With the help of the National Organization for ladies, Senator Barry Goldwater, and a crusading Seattle attorney at law, they triumphed over the united states Army.
