It's 1358. Oswald de Lacy, Lord Somershill, is within Venice awaiting a pilgrim galley to the Holy Land. While the city is under siege from the Hungarians, Oswald lodges with an English merchant and soon comes under the dangerous spell of the decadent and stunning island state that rests on the hinge of Europe, where East meets West. Oswald is wanting to flee the chilling shadow of something in his former, however when he detects a useless man on the night time of the carnival, he's dragged into a murder exploration that can take him deep in to the intrigues of this inexplicable, paranoid city. Coming up against the feared Signori di Notte, the trick police, Oswald learns that he's not the only person with something to hide. Everybody is observing somebody else, and no person in Venice is what he or she seems. The masks are not just for the carnival.
