Seth is a surveyor, along with his friend Theo, a leech-like creature running right through his skull who says Seth what sits to his departed and right. In the universe comprising Seth's world, light cannot travel in all directions: there's a "dark cone" to the north and south. Seth can only just face to the east (or the western, if he tips his head backwards). If he begins to turn to the north or south, his body exercises out across the landscape, and to rotate as far as north-northeast is impossible. Every living part of Seth's world is in a state of perpetual migration as they follow the sun's shifting orbit and the small habitable zone it creates. Locations are being constantly disassembled at one border and rebuilt at the other, with surveyors mapping safe routes ahead. However when Seth and Theo become a member of an expedition to the border of the habitable zone, they discover a terrifying hazard: a fissure in the top of world, so profound and large that no person can understand its boundaries. As the habitable zone continues to move, the migration will soon be blocked by this unbridgeable void, and the expedition has only 1 option to save lots of its city from annihilation: descend in to the unknown.
