Along with the epic blockbuster film Dunkirk, to be released in July, 2017, aimed by Christopher Nolan and starring, among others, Kenneth Branagh, Tom Hardy, and Mark Rylance, this reissue hasn't been more well-timed. "Where is the RAF?" was the oft-quoted question asked by soldiers hanging around on the beach at Dunkirk, to where they had retreated following the German blitzkrieg through north France, and where they were now being pounded by the Luftwaffe. The environment forces were there, as Norman Franks shows, detailing the excellent accomplishments of the Allied pilots who fought, using outmoded tactics, against foe pilots who experienced earlier experienced easy victories within the Polish, Dutch, and Belgian air pushes. The RAF's success reminds us precisely how close Britain came to disaster in June, 1940.
