Distant, silent, often drunk, Walter Urban is a difficult man to have as a father. But his child - the narrator of this slim, harrowing novel - is curious about Walter's experiences during World War II, therefore makes him a present of a empty notebook where to jot down his stories. Walter dies, however, leaving only the barest skeleton of a story on those webpages, leading his child to fill in the spaces himself, rightly or wrongly, with what he can piece together of his father's early life. This, then, is the storyline of Walter and his dangerously outspoken friend Friedrich Caroli, 17-year-old trainee milkers on the dairy farm in northern Germany who are tricked into volunteering for the military during the springtime of 1945: the last, and, in lots of ways, the worst, calendar months of the war. The men are powered to the idea of madness by what they experience, so when Friedrich finally deserts his post, Walter is obligated to do the unthinkable.
